The community of Moore County, North Carolina, is reeling after a heartbreaking double homicide on Valentine’s Day claimed the lives of 28-year-old Matthew Wade, a Mississippi Army soldier, and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Katerina “Kate” Tovmash, a Ukrainian refugee.

According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 7:45 a.m. on February 14 to a residence in the 700 block of Daphne Lane in the Woodlake community outside Vass. Upon arrival, they discovered Wade and Tovmash inside the home suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh of Ohio, described as Tovmash’s ex-boyfriend, as the suspect. Investigators allege Fosnaugh forced entry into the residence, leading to warrants for two counts of murder and breaking and entering. Following the incident, he fled North Carolina and was later apprehended without incident in Coshocton County, Ohio. His arrest was the result of coordinated efforts among the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Family members and friends have expressed profound grief over the loss. Wade’s sister, Megan, shared emotional details of the events, stating that the suspect allegedly drove seven hours from Ohio before entering the home. She described Wade as a devoted soldier with a promising future, dedicated to his Army service and eager to travel the world.

Tovmash, who had come to the United States as a refugee from Ukraine, was remembered by friends as compassionate, joyful, and resilient. Those close to her said she embraced life with hope despite the challenges she had faced, offering kindness and unwavering support to those around her.

As the investigation continues, the tragedy has left a lasting mark on Moore County and beyond. Loved ones now face the unimaginable task of grieving two lives cut short by violence. In the midst of sorrow, the community stands united in mourning, remembering Matthew Wade and Katerina “Kate” Tovmash not for the violence that ended their lives, but for the love, promise, and light they brought into the world.
