The Madison community is grieving the tragic death of 17-year-old Sasha Rosen, a student at West High School, who was fatally struck by a vehicle on February 5 while waiting at a bus stop on Park Street.
According to authorities, Kathleen Borgwardt, 51, has been charged with second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the incident. Prosecutors allege that Borgwardt was driving nearly 62 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone at the time of the crash. Video evidence reportedly showed her vehicle weaving through traffic moments before the collision. Officials also indicated that crosswalk warning lights were activated when Sasha was struck.
The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the teen’s death an accident caused by blunt force trauma. The loss has sent shockwaves through Madison, particularly within the West High School community, where classmates, teachers, and staff are mourning a young life cut tragically short.
Borgwardt was booked into custody with a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 30. Authorities have not released additional details as the case proceeds through the legal system.
Friends and family remember Sasha as a bright and valued member of the community, and tributes have appeared both online and near the crash site. Community members continue to call for road safety awareness, particularly in school zones and pedestrian areas.
As the legal process moves forward, Madison remains united in grief, honoring Sasha’s memory while seeking accountability and answers in the wake of this devastating loss.
