I was deeply disheartened to learn of the passing of Michael Frey. His death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of Fairfax County and in the lives of those of us privileged to know and serve alongside him. Michael was not only a respected public servant, but also a dear friend and trusted mentor whose steady presence and thoughtful counsel meant so much to me personally.
Michael dedicated an incredible 37 years of service to Fairfax County, including 24 years as a member of the Board of Supervisors. His commitment to our community was unwavering. He believed deeply in local government and in its power to improve people’s daily lives. Michael first stepped into the world of public service in 1978, working for my father when he served as Chairman. From the very beginning, it was clear that he possessed a deep sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to make a difference.
Throughout his long tenure, Michael approached every decision with integrity, diligence, and heart. He understood that public service was not about recognition, but about stewardship — about safeguarding the trust placed in him by the residents of Fairfax County. He worked tirelessly to strengthen our neighborhoods, support families, and ensure that county government operated with transparency and accountability.
One of Michael’s greatest passions was his advocacy for animals. His dedication to animal welfare was second to none and remained strong throughout his life. He championed policies and resources that improved the lives of countless animals and the families who loved them. In 2016, I was honored to ask the Board to name the animal shelter after him — a small but meaningful tribute to a man whose compassion extended to every corner of our community. Seeing his name associated with a cause he cared about so deeply was a fitting recognition of his legacy.
Beyond his accomplishments, I will remember Michael for his kindness, his wisdom, and his unwavering friendship. He was generous with his time, patient with his guidance, and steadfast in his principles. Fairfax County has lost a devoted leader, and I have lost a cherished friend.
Michael Frey will be sorely missed by the residents he served so faithfully and by all of us who had the privilege of calling him colleague and friend. May his legacy of service and compassion continue to inspire us.
